Police investigate shots fired report near University of Dayton campus

Police responded to a report of shots fired near the University of Dayton campus on Saturday night before an even larger police presence came to the area as fights were happening.

UD posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, at 9:23 p.m. that there was a report of shots fired in the 200 block of Kiefaber Street.

In follow-up posts, the school said there were no injuries reported but that residents in the area were being asked to shelter in place. Others were asked to avoid the area.

The request to shelter in place was lifted at 10:44 p.m.

The university said the investigation happened in the area of a parking lot between Stonemill Road and Kiefaber Street.

“UD police are investigating an incident of shots being fired around the CH parking lot between Kiefaber Street and Stonemill Road just before 9 p.m. tonight,” university officials said in a statement.

The university said later that “officers located evidence that shots were fired” in that area.

Shortly after 11 p.m., there was a large police response in the area of Speedway and UDF near the UD campus on Stewart Street. Our reporter on the scene said police were breaking up fights happening there that were seemingly unrelated to the shots fired report.

At about 11:45 p.m., police received a report of shots fired in the area of Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District. The report caused a large police presence to rush to the area, but our reporter on the scene said that police began to disperse not long after arriving.

The days around St. Patrick’s Day frequently bring large crowds to that residential area around UD mostly populated by UD students. Social media posts earlier in the day showed a crowd gathered in the neighborhood.
